TPGP Attempt: Braided Chignon

A couple weeks ago I saw this braided chignon on Honestly WTF, and thought it looked really pretty and elegant (minus the floral garland which is a little too Swiss Alps for me). So here’s my attempt to recreate the look in my own hair…which was marginally successful.

The directions are fairly easy. You curl your hair, finger-brush the waves out, and spray. Then you take two pieces of hair from the front sides, bring them together in the back, twist once, and pin (you can see the pinning closer up on the bottom right). I followed all the directions in the original post exactly except for the size of the curling iron–I used a 1  1/2″ barrel instead of a 3/4″ barrel.

Next up, you put the rest of your hair in a braid, pull the braid apart a bit for volume, then twist into a bun and pin. Voila. Sort of:

If you look at the original post, the model’s hair in a chignon looks really full and thick and voluminous. Mine is shrunken to half the size. And I think my hair length is about the same length as hers, so I’m not sure what the X factor is. I redid my hair several times, trying to get the same look and it just never worked. Ah well.

If you can master the first couple steps, curling the hair and then pulling back some pieces from the front sides, that’s a really pretty look that I use often, and probably doesn’t require as much mastery as the chignon.

I don’t think it’s a fail at all Beth! And it looks like the girl on Honestly WTF either had insanely thick hair, or they used a texturizer or something. Your attempt was still very pretty.

Thanks, that’s sweet. It’s looking a little school marm-ish to me. I don’t know, not my fave look. Someday I will master a chignon! It’s good to have goals. :)

Not a fail! It looks great. The trick with this style is stretching your braid out more before twisting it into the chignon. Also you want to twist the chignon loosely as that will make your bun look bigger too. And who doesn’t love big buns ;)
